Event photography requires a certain level of skill that comes with experience and I must say practice. Knowing ones equipment and having all technical matters handled and out of the way gives way to being fully present with the event and being ready to "capture the moment". There is also the element of interacting in such a way as to not draw attention to self but to pull out the very best of a person you are trying to capture. I look at the pictures I take of people as portraits certainly not as just a picture of what is happening.
Speed is an important factor of Event Photography. Being ready and able to react instantly. For me there is nothing more irritating than to be interrupted to have my picture taken and then the photographer takes their time in pushing button. Today we have the ability to check the image and make sure everyone's eyes are open. Being able to do all of this instantly shows a level of competence that only comes with lots of practice.
